Exams

Overview
There will be four (4) exams throughout the semester, and no final exam. See the "Important Dates to Remember" in the Course Information or the Lecture Schedule for specific dates. These exams will focus on both the reading and lecture material, but all material discussed during the lecture period (presentations, etc.) will be considered fair game. Several days before each exam I will hand out a Study Guide that outlines the most important topics covered during that quarter of the course.
Makeup Exams
There will NOT be opportunities to make up any of the in-class exams. If you have an excused absence, you will be allowed to take a final, comprehensive exam worth double the number of points of a regular exam. Finishing the semester this way is obviously not an ideal case for either of us, so please avoid it at all costs. If you have an unexcused absence for any exam or assignment, you will be given a zero (0) grade for that portion of the class.
Exam Rules
Our class is quite large (220+ students), so we have to employ some cheating safety measures. Our exams are closed book, closed note, etc.. I apologize for the inconvenience any of these rules may incur, but we will strictly adhere to the following rules for our exams:

  • Please bring a #2 pencil
  • No hats
  • No sunglasses (unless specifically prescribed by a doctor or other health care professional)
  • No talking
  • Cell phone, pager, etc. sounds signal end of exam for owner of beeping object
  • Cheating = Instant 0% + suspension proceedings
  • Show ASU ID when handing in exam

How to Study
Everyone learns differently, thus everyone has different studying methods. Here are some approaches that may help you on the exams, which will all be multiple choice and true/false.

  • Look at the chapters of the book before lectures, and read them thoroughly soon after the lecture. This will help the lecture to reinforce the concepts behind the subject matter.
  • Look over the Study Guide. Are these terms and concepts familiar and clear to you?
  • Read the book's Chapter Summaries for the chapters covered on the exam.
  • Are the Key Terms and Concepts at the end of the chapters familiar? If they are related to anything on the Study Guide, review them.
  • Can you answer the Exercises at the back of the book? If not, look through the chapter to ensure that you understand these concepts.
  • Take the chapter review quizzes that are on the book website. To do this, pick a chapter from the menu, then after that page loads, select "Self-Test" on the left-hand side of the page.
